Monis had been allowed to walk free on bail on three separate occasions when he fronted court on his criminal charges in the 12 months leading up to the siege. Just two months before the siege, Monis was charged with another 40 counts of sexual and aggravated indecent assault committed against six other women at the same spiritual healing practice. In April 2014, Monis was charged with sexually assaulting a woman at his spiritual healing practice in Western Sydney in 2002. In November 2013, he was charged with being an accessory, before and after the fact, to the murder of his ex-wife in April that same year. Monis was convicted of sending threatening and offensive letters between 20 to the families of seven Australian soldiers killed in Afghanistan. Man Haron Monis was a self-styled sheik, spiritual healer and clairvoyant.
